Sullia: Four residents of Halegetu in Sullia were injured after a speeding car allegedly rammed into their vehicle from behind on the Mani–Mysuru highway at Bolubailu in Jalsuru on February 21.

The injured have been identified as Vasantha, also known as Chandrashekhara, along with Ramya, Rashmi and Advit. The family members were reportedly on their way to purchase clothes for an upcoming housewarming ceremony when the accident took place, turning what was meant to be a joyful outing into a distressing ordeal.

Collision at Bolubailu

According to preliminary information, the accident occurred on a stretch of the Mani–Mysuru highway near Bolubailu in Jalsuru village limits. Vasantha was driving his car with the three others as passengers when another car bearing registration number KA 01 MG 2133 allegedly approached at high speed from behind.

The vehicle, reportedly driven by Manjunath, is said to have been operated in a rash and negligent manner. Eyewitnesses stated that the car suddenly rammed into the rear of Vasantha’s vehicle with considerable force. The impact caused Vasantha to lose control of the steering momentarily, leading to significant damage to both vehicles.

Locals rushed to the spot after hearing the loud crash. The front portion of the speeding car and the rear section of Vasantha’s vehicle were extensively damaged, indicating the severity of the collision.

Injured shifted to hospital

The four injured occupants of Vasantha’s car were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical sources said they sustained varying degrees of injuries but were out of danger. Further details regarding the extent of their injuries are awaited.

The occupants of the other car were identified as the driver, Manjunath, and a passenger named Jayarama. They reportedly escaped with minor injuries.

Residents in the area expressed concern over frequent instances of over-speeding on the Mani–Mysuru highway, particularly along stretches passing through villages such as Jalsuru. They pointed out that despite being a key route connecting interior parts of Dakshina Kannada district to Mysuru, certain segments lack adequate speed monitoring and enforcement.

Drunk driving suspected

Eyewitnesses present at the scene alleged that Manjunath appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. According to them, he behaved erratically after stepping out of the vehicle and was speaking incoherently.

Some bystanders claimed that his movements and manner of speech raised strong suspicion of drunk driving. However, officials have stated that the matter will be confirmed only after due medical examination and investigation.

The allegations have sparked anger among local residents, who demanded strict action if the driver is found guilty of driving under the influence. They emphasised that negligent driving endangers not only passengers but also other road users, including pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.

Police register case

Sullia police have registered a case in connection with the accident and initiated an investigation. Officers are examining the circumstances leading to the collision, including the possibility of rash driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police sources said statements are being recorded from the injured, eyewitnesses and other involved parties. The damaged vehicles have been inspected as part of the inquiry.

Authorities reiterated their appeal to motorists to adhere to traffic rules and avoid over-speeding, especially on highways passing through populated areas. They also warned that stringent action would be taken against those found violating laws related to drunk driving.

The incident serves as yet another reminder of the risks posed by reckless driving. While the four injured individuals are recovering, the accident has highlighted the need for greater caution and responsible behaviour on busy highways such as the Mani–Mysuru stretch.

Further investigation is underway, and police are expected to take appropriate legal action based on the findings.
