Bantwal: Poverty did not stop Sesappa, a civic worker at the Bantwal Town Municipal Council, from dreaming big. Today, he arrives at work in a second-hand Toyota Fortuner, a journey he says was built through years of hard work and determination.
A dream born on a bicycle
Sesappa, a resident of Navoor in Bantwal taluk, joined the municipal council in 1996 on a daily wage of just Rs. 50. For his first five years, he travelled to work on a bicycle.
While sweeping the streets, he would watch people driving cars and dream of owning one himself someday.
His dream gradually became a reality after he was appointed as a permanent employee. He first bought a Maruti 800, followed by a Maruti Omni, Swift, Alto and Scorpio.
He has now purchased a second-hand 2013-model Toyota Fortuner. Sesappa said he bought all his vehicles with the help of bank loans.
Hard work remains his strength
Sesappa begins his day at around 5.00 am in B C Road and works in cleaning and other civic duties until noon.
After completing his municipal work, he takes up daily wage jobs. He also rears cattle at home and manages water supply work for the local panchayat near his residence.
A journey built on determination
Sesappa leads a simple family life with his wife, two daughters and son. His son works as a dancer in Daiva Nema, while one daughter is employed and the other is pursuing her education.
From travelling to work on a humble bicycle to arriving in a Fortuner, Sesappa’s journey reflects how persistence and hard work can help turn a long-held dream into reality.
His story is a reminder that circumstances may shape where a person begins, but determination can help decide how far they go.
