Mangaluru: In a heartwarming turn of events, a youth from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, missing for over six months, was rescued from the streets of Udupi and reunited with his family on May 15. His transformation was made possible through the joint efforts of social workers and two rehabilitation centres.
Initially found living in poor hygienic conditions, the youth was rescued on March 22 by activist Eshwar Malpe and admitted to Snehalaya Charitable Trust in Kasaragod. Later, he was transferred to Shraddha Rehabilitation Foundation in Karjat, Mumbai, for further care.
According to Basavaraj S Chinnanavar from Shraddha, the young man had become severely addicted to mobile phones after dropping out of school. His addiction led to isolation from his family, who had been desperately searching for him. It is believed that he travelled by train to Udupi and lost his phone en route.
Following weeks of rehabilitation and persistent follow-ups, Shraddha Foundation successfully traced his family. His return sparked joy in his hometown, where he received a warm welcome. Doctors have prescribed two months of aftercare medication to aid his recovery.
A similar case occurred last year when another youth, addicted to mobile gaming, was rescued from the streets of Mangaluru. He had resorted to theft to fund his in-game purchases and was eventually helped by Snehalaya and Shraddha, before being reunited with his family.
Basavaraj noted a rising trend in mobile addiction cases, highlighting how screen obsession leads to emotional withdrawal and disconnection from real life.
