Mangaluru/Udupi: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi received good rainfall over the past 24 hours, bringing much-needed relief to residents who had been experiencing sweltering heat for the last couple of weeks.
The change in weather conditions followed a shift in the weather pattern over the Arabian Sea region, which the meteorological department has attributed to a depression formed over the Bay of Bengal. The department has forecast good rainfall across Karnataka, including the coastal belt, over the next four to five days.
The showers brought down temperatures across several parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, providing relief from the persistent heat and creating cloudy conditions in many areas.
Dakshina Kannada receives widespread showers
Several parts of Dakshina Kannada received rainfall from Thursday morning through the evening. Mangaluru city and surrounding areas, including Ullal, Bantwal, Dharmasthala, Konaje, Deralakatte and Surathkal, experienced good showers.
The district had been witnessing intense heat for the past two to three weeks, with the maximum temperature reaching 33.7 degrees Celsius. Following the showers, the maximum temperature dropped to 30.1 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 23.4 degrees Celsius.
The fall in temperature offered relief to residents who had been coping with hot and humid weather conditions. The rainfall also brought a noticeable change in the atmosphere across Mangaluru and other parts of the district.
Several areas witnessed intermittent showers rather than continuous heavy rainfall. However, the precipitation was sufficient to cool the surroundings and reduce the intensity of the heat experienced during the preceding days.
Byndoor records highest rainfall in Udupi
In neighbouring Udupi district, the impact of the weather system was more prominent in the Byndoor and Kundapur taluks, which recorded the highest rainfall during the 24-hour period.
Byndoor recorded 82.9 mm of rainfall, the highest among the locations mentioned in the district. Kundapur received 73.9 mm, while Hebri recorded 45.1 mm.
Other parts of Udupi district received comparatively lighter rainfall. Brahmavar recorded 14.9 mm, followed by Udupi with 3.5 mm, Karkala with 2.5 mm and Kaup with 0.3 mm.
The variation in rainfall across the district indicates that the showers were not uniform, with the northern coastal and interior areas around Byndoor, Kundapur and Hebri receiving significantly more rain than several other locations.
Cloudy conditions continue across coastal belt
Several parts of Udupi district received good showers on Friday morning, after which the rainfall gradually subsided. However, cloudy and overcast conditions continued through the day.
The combination of rainfall and reduced temperatures significantly eased the heat across the coastal belt. Residents in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi experienced a noticeable change after weeks of hot weather.
The weather department has forecast continued rainfall activity across the state for the next four to five days. Coastal Karnataka is also expected to receive further showers during this period as the prevailing weather system influences conditions over the region.
For residents of the coastal districts, the rainfall has provided welcome relief from the prolonged spell of heat. The showers have also brought a more pleasant atmosphere to several parts of Mangaluru, Udupi and neighbouring areas.
With the meteorological department forecasting more rain in the coming days, coastal Karnataka could continue to experience cooler and cloudier conditions after the recent spell of high temperatures.
