Radhakrishnan Nair, often referred to as the “Green Hero of India,” emphasized the importance of developing forests along the coastline as a solution to coastal erosion. Speaking at his felicitation by the Mangaluru Press Club on Tuesday, Nair criticized the common practice of placing stones and boulders along the shore, claiming that such measures only get swallowed by the sea and offer no long-term resolution.

“You cannot fight nature; our activities must complement nature for it to respond positively,” Nair stated, underscoring his belief in working in harmony with the environment. Nair is renowned for creating 121 Miyawaki forests across 12 Indian states, planting over 32 lakh trees. He even took on the challenge of creating forests in sandy and arid areas, proving that trees can thrive in desert environments. One notable achievement is the Smritivan in Bhuj, Gujarat, which boasts over 5.3 lakh trees, with plans for an additional 12 lakh in the next phase. “Various species of fish, animals, and birds now flourish in these forests,” he proudly shared.

Reflecting on his early life, Nair recalled moving to Mumbai in 1989, where he worked in a medical store, then a hotel, and eventually found success in the garment industry. “I moved to Gujarat and started my own garment business, which is now expanding with the help of my family,” he explained.

Nair also spoke about the unique connection he has with nature, stating that while trees may not speak in words, they understand and respond to human presence. “When I enter the Miyawaki forest I created, birds fly around me, welcoming me. They only leave after I communicate with them,” he shared.

While he follows the Miyawaki method, Nair emphasized that his afforestation technique is distinct from the original concept developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. “I call it ‘Bharat dense forests,'” he said, showcasing his dedication to creating sustainable, local solutions.

The event was inaugurated by Khader Shah, Senior Assistant Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations. Mangaluru Press Club President P B Harish Rai, Secretary Ibrahim Adkasthala, and Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Association President Shrinivas Nayak Indaje were also present.
