Mangaluru: Widespread rainfall across Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday brought much-needed relief from the prevailing humid weather conditions, while simultaneously causing waterlogging, minor property damage and disruption to public infrastructure in several areas. The showers, which varied in intensity across the district, affected both urban and rural regions, prompting weather authorities to issue fresh warnings for the coastal belt.
Heavy rainfall was reported from Bantwal, BC Road, Kalladka, Vitla, Kanyana, Pervai, Puttur, Bettampady, Kabaka, Belthangady, Charmady, Madanthyaru, Venooru, Kokkada, Moodbidri, Mulki, Uppinangady, Karaya, Perne, Sullia, Surathkal, Konaje and Ullal. Mangaluru city also experienced intermittent rain throughout the day, contributing to cooler temperatures and overcast skies.
Waterlogging raises concerns in Adyar
Mangaluru’s Adyar area witnessed significant water accumulation following the rainfall, particularly in locations where National Highway construction work is currently underway. Several houses were inundated after rainwater entered residential premises, causing inconvenience to residents.
Locals alleged that the ongoing highway development involved raising the road level through extensive soil filling without adequate drainage provisions. According to residents, the lack of proper stormwater management has resulted in recurring flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Affected residents have urged authorities to construct a retaining wall and improve drainage infrastructure in the area to prevent future incidents and safeguard nearby homes from water damage.
Damage reported to houses and power infrastructure
Mangaluru district authorities reported that five houses suffered partial damage due to rain-related incidents during the day. Additionally, 43 electricity poles were damaged across various parts of the district, highlighting the impact of the adverse weather conditions on public infrastructure.
Officials continue to monitor vulnerable locations and assess the extent of damage caused by the ongoing monsoon activity. Restoration work is expected to be carried out in affected areas to ensure uninterrupted power supply and public safety.
Rainfall figures indicate active monsoon conditions

Among the taluks, Belthangady received the highest rainfall at 19.3 mm, followed by Moodbidri with 17.5 mm and Mulki with 16.4 mm. Kadaba recorded 14 mm, while Mangaluru received 13.2 mm. The widespread distribution of rainfall across the district reflects the strengthening monsoon activity along Karnataka’s coastal region.
IMD issues yellow and orange alerts
Mangaluru and the wider coastal Karnataka region remain under close watch as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for June 11 and an Orange Alert for June 12.
The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across the coastal districts. Authorities have warned that wind speeds may range between 40 kmph and 60 kmph along the Karnataka coastline until June 12.
Given the expected rough sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during the alert period. Coastal residents have also been urged to remain cautious and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.
Udupi records moderate rain and wind damage
Neighbouring Udupi district also experienced moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Although cloud cover persisted throughout the day, rainfall remained largely intermittent across the district.
The combined impact of rain and strong winds over the past two days has resulted in damage to residential structures, with losses estimated at ₹2.05 lakh.
Rainfall was reported from Kapu, Hebri, Karkala, Brahmavar, Kundapur and Byndoor taluks. During the last 24 hours, Karkala recorded the highest rainfall in the district at 28.4 mm. Kapu received 22 mm, followed by Udupi at 21.8 mm, Brahmavar at 20.4 mm, Hebri at 17.1 mm and Kundapur at 13.4 mm.
Coastal districts brace for more rain
Mangaluru and Udupi districts are expected to continue receiving rainfall over the coming days as monsoon conditions strengthen across Karnataka’s coast. While the rains have provided relief from heat and humidity, concerns remain over flooding, infrastructure damage and disruptions caused by strong winds.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas, as weather alerts remain in effect and further heavy rainfall is forecast.
