Mangaluru: A bomb threat call received by Kanachur Medical College Hospital near Deralakatte in Ullal taluk triggered a wave of panic on Wednesday, prompting a swift emergency response from local law enforcement and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS).

The anonymous threat, made over a phone call, claimed that an explosive device had been planted on the hospital premises. The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Konaje police station.

Acting swiftly, authorities evacuated patients, staff, and visitors from the hospital and cordoned off the area. The BDDS, along with sniffer dogs and a team of local police, conducted a meticulous multi-hour search across the entire campus.

No explosives were found, and the call was ultimately declared a hoax.

The Konaje police have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the caller, who is believed to have used a mobile phone. Technical experts are now analyzing call data records to identify the person responsible.

Police have stressed that bomb hoaxes are a grave criminal offence, especially when they involve healthcare institutions. “Such false alarms not only waste vital resources but also create unnecessary fear and chaos,” said a senior officer, warning of strict legal consequences for those behind such acts.

Kanachur Medical College, a key healthcare institution in Dakshina Kannada district, serves patients from both Karnataka and neighbouring Kerala.
