A retired Indian Air Force (IAF) sergeant, P V Sureshan (49), lost his left leg following a reported act of police brutality at Mangaluru Central Railway Station. Sureshan, who served as a Ground Training Instructor, arrived in Mangaluru on February 1 to visit the military canteen. Feeling unwell after his crowded train journey, he sat on a bench to rest.

A policeman reportedly woke him up and instructed him not to sleep there. When Sureshan explained that he was an ex-serviceman and feeling ill, the officer left, only to return moments later and allegedly strike his leg with a baton. The repeated blows left him unable to walk.

His worried family, unable to reach him, contacted the police for assistance. Eventually, he was taken to Wenlock Hospital and later shifted to Father Muller Hospital, where doctors discovered severe internal injuries, including kidney failure. Despite medical intervention, circulation in his left leg could not be restored, leading to amputation on February 11.

A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged on February 6, yet no suspects have been identified. Investigators have neither reviewed CCTV footage nor taken concrete steps, citing the victim’s hospitalization as a reason for the delay.

The lack of swift action has sparked outrage, highlighting concerns over police excesses and delayed justice for the retired serviceman.
