Bondel parish youth shine at badminton tournament
Bejai: The ICYM Bondel unit successfully conducted the ‘Smash It Up’ Badminton League 2K25 on September 28 at Lourdes Central School, Bejai. The tournament, exclusively for parishioners of Bondel church, aimed to encourage youth participation, physical fitness, and parish-level fellowship through competitive sport.
A total of 48 players competed, representing four teams: Shuttle Blockers, Church Friends Bondel, Net Pulse, and Bondel Challengers. The matches showcased skill, enthusiasm, and spirited sportsmanship, reflecting the energy and dedication of the parish youth.
Inauguration and dignitaries
The event was inaugurated in the esteemed presence of Fr JB Saldanha, parish priest of Bejai Church, who delivered the opening address and blessed the participants. Other dignitaries included Fr Lawrence Cutinha, director of ICYM Bondel unit; Fr Peter Gonzalves, principal of St Lawrence English Medium School; Fr Ivan Corderio and Fr Pramod Crasta, assistant managers of Codialbail Press; John D’Silva, president of the parish pastoral council; and Zeena Cornellio, animator of ICYM Bondel unit.
Rohan D’Souza, president of ICYM Bondel unit, welcomed the guests and highlighted the spirit and objectives of the tournament, setting a positive tone for the event.
Fair play and officiating
Matches were officiated by a qualified panel including Fr Clany D’Souza, rector of Gladsom Home Minor Seminary, along with Br Ashton D’Souza, Br Leroy D’Cunha, Br Prince Tellis, and Br Austin D’Souza. Their impartial adjudication ensured smooth conduct and adherence to fair play standards throughout the tournament. The presence of the ICYM City deanery president and core committee members further strengthened the collaborative spirit of youth leadership across ICYM units.
Tournament highlights and winners
The league witnessed intense competition and commendable sportsmanship. Shuttle Blockers, led by Sunitha D’Souza, emerged as winners, while Church Friends Bondel, led by Manish Mascarenhas, secured the runners-up position. All category winners were felicitated, celebrating their achievements and inspiring other participants.
Special appreciation was extended to team owners for their contributions: Sunitha D’Souza (Shuttle Blockers), Stephen D’Silva (Net Pulse), Francis Mendonca (Bondel Challengers), and Manish Mascarenhas (Church Friends Bondel). Stephen D’Silva was also acknowledged for sponsoring medals for standout players, adding recognition and encouragement for the participants.
