Mangaluru: In a significant late-night enforcement action aimed at maintaining law and order, personnel from the Konaje Police Station detected and seized a deadly weapon that was being illegally transported in a car during a routine patrol near the Mudipu check post on Saturday night. The incident underscores the police department’s continued vigilance against activities that could potentially threaten public peace and safety within the city’s outskirts.

Late-night patrol leads to major seizure

According to official sources, the seizure took place during a late-night patrol conducted by Konaje Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mohan L, who was accompanied by his staff as part of routine night surveillance within the station limits. The patrol team had set up a vehicle check near the Mudipu check post, a location that frequently sees vehicular movement even during late hours.

At around the time of the inspection, the police team stopped a car for routine checking. Such checks are regularly carried out during night patrols to deter illegal activities, including the transportation of contraband, weapons, and other materials that could be used for unlawful purposes.

Weapon hidden in car boot

During a detailed inspection of the vehicle, the police discovered a machete concealed in the boot of the car. The weapon reportedly had a wooden handle measuring approximately six inches and a sharp blade nearly two feet long. Police officials described the machete as a deadly weapon capable of causing serious harm, raising immediate concerns about the intent behind its transportation.

The weapon was allegedly being carried without any valid authorisation or legal permit, which constitutes a punishable offence under relevant provisions of the law. The manner in which the machete was hidden further strengthened the suspicion that it was being transported with malicious intent.

Suspected intent to disturb public peace

Police sources stated that the accused was allegedly carrying the weapon during late hours with the intention of disturbing public peace. While the exact motive is still under investigation, officials noted that the possession of such a weapon at night, without lawful justification, poses a serious threat to public safety.

“The presence of a sharp and dangerous weapon in a vehicle during late-night hours cannot be taken lightly. Such actions have the potential to escalate into violent incidents and create fear among the public,” a police official said.

Case registered, vehicle seized

Following the recovery of the weapon, the Konaje police seized both the machete and the car used to transport it. A case has been registered against the accused at the Konaje Police Station under the relevant sections of the law for illegal possession and transportation of a deadly weapon.

The accused is expected to be questioned further to ascertain the source of the weapon, the purpose for which it was being carried, and whether there is any connection to previous criminal activities or planned unlawful acts in the area.

Police reiterate commitment to public safety

Senior police officials have reiterated that night patrols and vehicle checks will continue to be intensified, especially in areas bordering the city and along key transit routes. Such measures, they said, are crucial to preventing crimes and ensuring the safety of residents.

The Konaje police have also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during routine checks and to report any suspicious activities or movements to the nearest police station.

Conclusion

The seizure of the machete near the Mudipu check post highlights the importance of proactive policing and regular night patrols in preventing potential threats to public peace. As investigations continue, the Konaje police have assured citizens that strict action will be taken against those found indulging in illegal activities, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining law and order in and around Mangaluru.
