Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding rough sea conditions along the coastal belt and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea over the next two days due to the possibility of strong waves and gusty winds. The alert comes amid rainfall activity reported across several regions of Karnataka, including Coastal Karnataka and parts of the interior districts.

The weather department said sea conditions are likely to become increasingly rough, posing potential risks to fishing activities and marine operations. Authorities have urged fishing communities and those engaged in coastal activities to exercise caution and strictly follow advisories issued by the department.

Rainfall reported across several districts

Rainfall continued in multiple regions of the state over the past 24 hours, with several coastal and interior areas recording moderate precipitation.

Mulki in Dakshina Kannada district registered the highest rainfall at 7 cm. Haveri followed with 5 cm of rainfall. Other locations that recorded notable rainfall included:

  • Moodbidri – 4 cm
  • Shivamogga – 4 cm
  • Hunchadakatte – 4 cm
  • Kottigehara – 4 cm
  • Uppinangady – 3 cm
  • Puttur – 3 cm
  • Sullia – 3 cm
  • Sringeri – 3 cm
  • Bhagamandala – 3 cm

Rainfall activity was also observed in isolated parts of North Interior Karnataka, while several regions in South Interior Karnataka experienced scattered showers.

Meteorological officials indicated that the rainfall pattern is consistent with prevailing weather systems influencing the state and nearby coastal regions.

Strong winds and high waves expected

According to the IMD forecast, strong winds over the coastal sea belt are expected to intensify today and tomorrow. The weather department warned that high waves and gusty conditions may affect normal sea conditions and create difficulties for fishing vessels.

Fishing operations in coastal regions are particularly vulnerable during such weather conditions because rough seas can increase risks associated with navigation and safety.

Authorities often issue precautionary advisories ahead of intensified weather activity to minimise risks to fishermen and coastal communities.

Advisory issued for fishing communities

The department has specifically advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve. Those currently involved in fishing-related activities have also been asked to monitor official weather updates and follow local administration instructions.

Coastal districts frequently experience weather-related disruptions during periods of active rainfall and changing wind patterns. Sudden changes in sea conditions can affect not only fishing activities but also transportation and other marine-related operations.

Officials have urged residents in coastal areas to remain alert and stay informed through official forecasts and warnings.

Monitoring weather developments

Weather authorities continue to monitor the evolving conditions and are expected to issue further updates if required. While rainfall has brought relief in some areas, stronger winds and rough sea conditions remain a matter of concern for coastal communities.

The advisory serves as a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring safety and preventing possible incidents at sea during the period of unstable weather conditions.
