Mangaluru: The enduring influence of Indian literature took centre stage at a special book exhibition inaugurated at St Aloysius Deemed University’s Sahodaya Auditorium. Organised by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, in collaboration with the university’s Konkani Institute and Vision Konkani, the event forms part of the centenary celebrations of eminent Konkani litterateur V.J.P. Saldanha and is accompanied by a two-day national seminar.

‘Power of literature has no parallel’

Dr Mahaling Bhat, Dean of the Language Department at St Aloysius Deemed University, opened the exhibition with a tribute to India’s rich linguistic heritage. He noted that unlike many countries with a single dominant language, India boasts thousands of languages and literatures that span over two millennia of history.

“Beyond the written word, India’s oral traditions are profound. Publishing quality works in 24 languages and translating them across these languages is no small feat, yet the Sahitya Akademi has done it for decades,” Dr Bhat remarked. He encouraged visitors to explore the Akademi’s series on Indian literary pioneers, which provide valuable insights into historical and cultural contexts.

Poet Melvyn Rodrigues, Convenor of the Konkani Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, delivered the introductory address, while H.M. Pernal, a member of the Advisory Board, moderated the event and presented the vote of thanks.

Other notable attendees included:
