The sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing was set to begin with a splash but instead opened to rain-soaked disappointment on Saturday. Due to heavy downpours and rough sea conditions at Tannirbhavi Eco Beach, all scheduled events for Day 1 were cancelled for safety reasons.
Originally planned for Sasihithlu Beach, the competition had already been shifted earlier in the week anticipating monsoon onset and cyclonic activity in the Arabian Sea. However, persistent rain, high swells, and unpredictable wave breaks rendered even the backup location unfit for competition.
“This sport is at the mercy of nature, and today, nature dictated the terms,” said Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI). While no events were held, the day was utilized for registrations, kit handover, and participant orientation.
Over 50 surfers from across the country are slated to compete across Men’s and Women’s Open categories and Under-16 Groms for boys and girls. Top athletes including Ramesh Budhial, Kishore Kumar, Kamali P, Shrishti Selvam, and Sinchana Gowda are expected to take the waters once conditions permit.
Contest Director Nawaz Jabbar affirmed that safety remains the priority, citing short wave intervals, poor visibility, and a rough sea state as reasons for the delay.
Organisers, including Mantra Surf Club and Surfing Swami Foundation, remain hopeful for improved weather ahead. The event is supported by Karnataka Tourism, Cycle Pure Agarbathies, and the New Mangalore Port Authority.
