The Indian Navy ship INS Surat reached New Mangalore Port in Panambur late Monday night, carrying 18 sailors rescued from the Singapore-registered container vessel MV Wan Hai 503, which was engulfed in flames.

Among those saved, two crew members suffered critical injuries, while four others sustained minor wounds. The critically injured individuals are identified as Lu Yanli from China and Sonitur Haeni from Indonesia. Meanwhile, those with less severe injuries include Xu Fabao and Guo Linino, both Chinese nationals, and two sailors from Myanmar — Thein Than Htay and Kyi Zaw Htoo.

All six injured crew members were promptly taken to a private medical facility in Mangaluru for treatment. The remaining 12, who were unhurt, have been relocated to a local hotel for safety and rest, according to police sources.

The fire broke out on MV Wan Hai 503 while it was traveling from Colombo to Mumbai, about 78 nautical miles off Kerala’s Beypore coast. Upon receiving the emergency call, the Indian Navy acted swiftly, deploying INS Surat to carry out the rescue operation.

Of the 22 crew aboard the ill-fated ship, 18 were saved. The rescued personnel include eight from China, four each from Taiwan and Myanmar, and two from Indonesia.

This efficient naval mission underscores the Indian Navy’s readiness and commitment to maritime safety.
