Subhaschandra Basu, convener of the Mangaluru chapter of INTACH, emphasized the expansive nature of museums during the inaugural celebration of International Museum Day at Mahatma Gandhi Museum. The event, observed for the first time in Mangaluru, brought attention to the global significance of museums, following the declaration by the International Council of Museums and UNESCO.

Addressing this year’s theme of ‘Museums for Education and Research,’ Basu advocated for viewing the entire world and environment as an open museum, emphasizing the need for conservation, learning, and study beyond the confines of traditional museum spaces.

Kasturi Balakrishna Pai, a prominent figure in the cricket world and an alumnus of Canara High School, shared nostalgic memories of his school days and commended the maintenance of artifacts in the old museum. He encouraged female students to actively participate in forming college cricket teams, empowering them to excel in regional and national-level matches.

Director of the Museum, Payyanur Ramesh Pai, provided insights into the history and background of the Mahatma Gandhi Museum, offering attendees a deeper understanding of its significance. The event attracted volunteers from the National Service Scheme at Canara College, teachers from Canara English Higher Primary School, and members of the general public, providing them with an enriching opportunity to explore the museum’s offerings.
