In a powerful show of eco-conscious citizenship, Mangaluru’s well-known environmentalist Jeet Milan has spearheaded the planting of 4,300 Ratnagandhi (Peacock Flower) saplings along the city’s road medians. Timed with World Environment Day, this large-scale initiative aims to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and ecological balance of the coastal city.
Founder of the Vanaa Charitable Trust, Jeet has been a long-standing advocate for sustainable living. His environmental work spans tree plantations, waste management campaigns, and public awareness initiatives. This latest afforestation drive stretches from Kankanady to Nandigudda, Maroli to Morgans Gate, and Maroli to Mangaladevi, turning concrete dividers into green corridors.
Of the 4,300 saplings, 3,000 were funded by the Vanaa Trust, while 1,300 came through support from CFL. Over four days, the planting was carried out with enthusiastic help from local volunteers and eco-supporters.
The Caesalpinia pulcherrima, locally known as Ratnagandhi, was strategically chosen for its bright blossoms, pollinator-friendly nature, and nitrogen-fixing capabilities. These low-maintenance, drought-resistant plants also serve as natural air purifiers and habitat boosters for birds, bees, and butterflies.
Beyond this, Jeet’s efforts include composting workshops, anti-plastic drives, and introducing environmental education in schools and colleges. His hands-on, people-driven model has inspired a broader culture of environmental responsibility across the city.
As Mangaluru’s roadsides bloom with colour and purpose, Jeet Milan’s initiative stands as a model of grassroots green action.
