Mangaluru: In a landmark move to elevate coastal Karnataka’s cultural pride, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that Kambala, the traditional buffalo race, will officially be included in the Dasara sports meet from this year onward.

Speaking at the valedictory of Gurupura Kambalotsava, a dazzling night Kambala event held at Manibettu Guthu fields in Gurupura, Shivakumar hailed the sport as a symbol of the region’s heritage and sporting spirit.

“Kambala represents more than a race — it reflects the soul of our tradition. Our government will not only support it locally but promote it globally,” he said to thunderous applause.

This marks the first time Kambala will be recognized on a state-level stage like Dasara, traditionally known for showcasing Karnataka’s folk and sporting glory.

Cultural Tourism Push

Shivakumar also highlighted Dakshina Kannada’s potential as a cultural and religious tourism hub. With its vibrant festivals, heritage sports, and scenic coastline, he said the region is poised to become a major destination.

The government, he assured, will extend logistical and financial support to preserve and promote such unique traditions.

The inclusion of Kambala in the Dasara meet is seen as a major win for coastal communities and cultural revivalists, marking a turning point in how traditional rural sports are celebrated statewide.
