Mangaluru: Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundurao has announced the establishment of a new critical care unit at Government Wenlock District Hospital, with an investment of ₹17 crore. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the Medical and Surgical Super Specialty Department at the hospital on Thursday.

The minister highlighted that the upgraded facility is now on par with modern private hospitals, featuring modular operating rooms and cutting-edge medical equipment. He also assured the provision of neuro, cardio-thoracic, and patella replacement surgeries, with a cath lab set to be established within the next two months.

Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader stressed the importance of quality care and advocated for integrating specialized units such as Jayadeva Heart Science and Research Institute, NIMHANS, and Kidwai Memorial Foundation within the hospital.

MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath suggested developing an app to efficiently manage the hospital’s advanced equipment. The event also honoured Dr. Rajeshwaridevi, a former district surgeon and superintendent, for her significant contributions.

Attendees included Mayor Sudhir Shetty Kannur, MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, Corporation Opposition Leader Praveen Chandra Alva, and district officials.

In a related appeal, MP K. Brijesh Chauta urged the state government to consider establishing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital in Mangaluru, citing the large population served by the region. He emphasised the need for a cancer treatment unit and addressing the staff shortage at the existing hospital.

The inauguration of the new department and the announcement of the critical care unit represent a significant advancement in enhancing healthcare services in Mangaluru and the surrounding area.
