Mangaluru: In a significant move to bolster law and order, Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwar inaugurated the Special Action Force (SAF)—a pioneering initiative designed to address communal disturbances across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga districts.
This newly formed unit includes 258 personnel, divided into three companies, each with 78 officers. The SAF incorporates a multi-tiered command structure, with positions ranging from DIGP and SP to PSI, CPC, and APC, ensuring an organized and effective response to emerging threats.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Parameshwar stated the SAF would serve not only to strengthen public safety but also as a template for other Indian states. He recalled his previous visit to Mangaluru during Kuldeep Jain’s tenure as Police Commissioner, where initial efforts were made to form an anti-communal unit. While partial success was achieved, the persistent spread of hate and unrest has now necessitated a specialized force to restore peace.
He noted, “This team, similar in approach to the Anti-Naxal Force, will actively counter communal violence. We initially adopted a reconciliatory approach, but its limited effectiveness led to the SAF’s formation.”
The Home Minister urged citizens to cooperate and reduce unrest, as fewer conflicts would mean less deployment. He added that cybercrime training is underway at SP offices to equip constables with modern policing skills.
Additionally, Dr Parameshwar inaugurated police housing quarters in Mangaluru and Beltangady, built at a cost of ₹21 crore, offering modern 2BHK flats for police families.
