Mangaluru: KMC Hospital Attavar, in association with the Department of Paediatric Oncology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, will organise a free Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Typing Camp on May 8, 2026, in observance of World Thalassemia Day.
The initiative aims to support thalassemia patients in exploring the possibility of curative bone marrow transplantation through donor compatibility testing.
Camp details and purpose
The camp will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at Tower II, Lecture Hall 1, KMC Hospital Attavar.
Participation is limited, and prior appointments are mandatory.
HLA typing is an essential test used to determine compatibility between a patient and a potential bone marrow donor. In several thalassemia cases, a successful bone marrow transplant can offer a long-term cure.
Family participation encouraged
Since siblings and immediate family members have a higher likelihood of being compatible donors, patients are requested to attend the camp along with their siblings and/or parents.
Specialists from the Department of Paediatric Oncology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, will conduct the camp and provide guidance regarding donor matching, transplant procedures, and future treatment options.
Raising awareness on thalassemia care
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Chakrapani, Medical Superintendent of KMC Hospital Attavar, emphasised the importance of accessible advanced care for children and families affected by blood disorders.
He stated that thalassemia places significant emotional and financial stress on families, and initiatives like this can help eligible patients move closer to a possible cure.
He added that every successful donor match has the potential to transform a child’s life.
Observing World Thalassemia Day
World Thalassemia Day is observed annually on May 8 to spread awareness about thalassemia, promote early diagnosis, and improve access to treatment and supportive care for patients worldwide.
The camp reflects the hospital’s commitment to community healthcare and specialised treatment support.
