Mangaluru: KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, inaugurated its newly renovated radiodiagnosis department along with a high-speed 128-slice CT scanner and advanced mammography unit on April 1, 2026. The upgraded facility was inaugurated by Dr. H. S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

The enhanced department integrates advanced diagnostic imaging technologies under one roof, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy, enable faster clinical decision-making, and deliver better patient care.

Advanced imaging technology introduced

The newly upgraded department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a 128-slice CT scanner, advanced mammography, 1.5T MRI, digital X-ray, ultrasound, Doppler, fetal medicine, and interventional radiology services.

These integrated services are supported by a multidisciplinary team of experienced radiologists and technicians, ensuring seamless and efficient patient care.

Legacy and transformation of radiology services

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. H. S. Ballal reflected on the department’s evolution over the years. He noted that the radiology unit has grown from modest beginnings into a highly advanced diagnostic facility.

He emphasised that the transformation reflects a strong commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and high standards of patient care. The integration of modern imaging technologies, he added, will further strengthen early diagnosis and improve clinical outcomes.

Focus on early diagnosis and patient care

Dr. Santhosh Rai, Head of Radiology, highlighted that the renovation marks a significant step in delivering precise, timely, and patient-centric diagnostic services.

He stated that the availability of advanced imaging modalities within a single department enables faster diagnosis and coordinated care. The presence of experienced lady radiologists further enhances services in areas such as breast imaging and women’s health.

The department will offer round-the-clock imaging services, ensuring 24/7 access for patients.

Importance of preventive imaging

The hospital emphasised the importance of early disease detection through advanced imaging. Mammography screening can detect breast cancer at early stages, with studies showing a reduction in mortality by 25–30 per cent among women above 40 years.

Additionally, advanced CT technology allows early screening for heart disease through coronary artery calcium scoring and CT coronary angiography, helping identify early plaque formation in arteries.

Early diagnosis, experts noted, leads to simpler treatments, reduced hospital stays, and lower healthcare costs, while improving long-term health outcomes.

Strengthening healthcare infrastructure

Mr. Pramod Kunder, Cluster Director, stated that the upgraded radiodiagnosis department reflects the hospital’s commitment to investing in world-class infrastructure and enhancing healthcare delivery.

He added that patient-centric services such as Sunday OPD, evening OPD, and emergency medicine will benefit from the 24/7 scanning and reporting services, ensuring timely and efficient care.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the advanced radiology department at KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, marks a major step in strengthening diagnostic capabilities and patient care. With cutting-edge technology and integrated services, the hospital continues to advance its commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-focused healthcare.
