Mangaluru: In a landmark achievement, doctors at KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, successfully performed a rare and intricate cardiac surgery on a 35–40-year-old male patient (name changed to Rohit), diagnosed with an unruptured Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm and severe aortic regurgitation—a congenital heart anomaly found in less than 1% of individuals.
Rohit had been struggling with fatigue, breathlessness during routine tasks, and swelling in both legs. Investigations revealed a Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm, a condition where a portion of the aortic wall bulges due to a congenital defect, often impairing nearby valve function.
A skilled multidisciplinary team led by Dr Harish Raghavan, Dr Madhav Kamath, Dr Iresh Shetty (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery), Dr Panchakshari Gowda (Cardiac Anaesthesia), and Dr M N Bhat (Interventional Cardiology), undertook the surgery. It involved patch closure of the aneurysm and replacement of the severely leaking aortic valve with a mechanical prosthesis.
“This was a rare and challenging case,” said Dr Raghavan. “Thanks to early detection, we were able to perform the repair in a controlled surgical setting. The patient recovered smoothly and was discharged within a week.”
Regional COO Saghir Siddiqui lauded the hospital’s expertise: “This case highlights our commitment to high-end cardiac care through early diagnosis and team-based intervention.”
The patient is now recovering well, with restored heart function and relief from previous symptoms.
