Mangaluru – A looming landslide threat in Kethikkal, Vamanjur, located on the outskirts of Mangaluru, has triggered concern among daily commuters and residents alike.

The Mangaluru–Moodbidri stretch of National Highway 169 may soon face severe traffic disruptions, as soil from an adjacent hill has begun to erode and spill onto the road, posing a potential hazard to vehicles.

Eyewitnesses reported that loose earth and debris have started slipping onto the highway, especially following consistent and intense rainfall over the past few days. The affected area lies near a sharp bend, further increasing the danger for motorists.

The fear of a major landslide has left drivers and local travelers anxious, especially during peak travel hours. Residents and frequent road users are demanding that emergency measures be taken to stabilize the slope and avert a disaster.

The unstable terrain has already resulted in a narrower pathway, forcing vehicles to slow down and navigate cautiously. Many two-wheeler riders and private vehicle owners are avoiding the route altogether, choosing alternative roads despite longer distances.

Local authorities are expected to conduct an inspection and possibly implement precautionary actions, such as placing barricades, deploying personnel for traffic monitoring, and laying tarpaulin or sandbags to control further erosion.

If the current situation worsens, commuting between Mangaluru and Moodbidri could be significantly impacted, with the NH-169 becoming partially or fully impassable.
