The Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court in Mangaluru has sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing and attempting to circulate counterfeit currency. The court also levied a fine of ₹20,000 on the convict.
The accused, Abbas (57), a resident of Ira village in Bantwal taluk, tried to pass off counterfeit ₹100 notes under the pretense of purchasing goods. He initially deceived a printing shop by claiming he needed colored copies of currency notes for his children’s school project. However, he later kept the fake notes with the intent to distribute them.
On October 31, 2020, as he attempted to use the counterfeit money at a shop near Morgan’s Gate Junction, CCB Police Sub-Inspector Pradeep T.R. and his team conducted a raid. During the operation, officers seized 11 fake currency notes along with two genuine ones.
A case was subsequently registered at Mangaluru South Police Station under Sections 489(b) and 489(c) of the IPC. Sub-Inspector Suresh Kumar led the investigation, compiling evidence that resulted in a charge sheet against Abbas.
After reviewing 14 documents and hearing testimony from 13 witnesses, Judge Sunitha S.G. convicted Abbas under Section 489(c) of the IPC, sentencing him to five years of rigorous imprisonment.
