Once envisioned as a proud city landmark, Mangaluru’s iconic Clock Tower has now become a symbol of neglect, with its abandoned fountain turning into a mosquito-breeding ground, raising concerns over the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria.
Despite being built at a staggering cost of ₹10 crore, the structure remains officially uninaugurated. The lack of upkeep has rendered the fountain defunct, leaving stagnant, polluted water filled with plastic waste and debris. The surrounding area, now littered with garbage, has also become a refuge for vagrants.
For the past three years, the Clock Tower’s water pipes have been leaking, leading to frequent disruptions. While water supply was briefly cut off for repairs, the motor has now stopped working entirely. However, water continues to flow into the non-functional fountain, leading to stagnation and worsening hygiene conditions.
Despite repeated complaints, both the city corporation and Smart City authorities have failed to take corrective measures.
Acknowledging the issue, Mangaluru mayor Manoj Kumar Kodikal stated, “I am aware of the neglect in maintaining the Clock Tower. I have visited the site for inspection and directed officials to take immediate action to clean the area.”
