Mangaluru: The Commission for Women, Diocese of Mangalore, organised a Training of Trainers (TOT) programme for women leaders from across the Bantwal Deanery at Modankap Church, equipping them with knowledge on gender sensitisation, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The initiative was held in line with the Diocesan Pastoral Plan, aiming to empower parish leaders to promote safer, more inclusive and respectful communities.

Building awareness and leadership

The programme began with an invocation by Mrs Lora Tauro, followed by the inaugural address by Very Rev. Fr Victor D’Souza, Dean Forane of Bantwal Deanery.

In his message, Fr D’Souza highlighted the importance of creating safe and welcoming environments in homes, parishes and institutions. He encouraged the women leaders to become ambassadors of awareness and positive change within their respective parish communities.

Experts lead interactive training sessions

The day featured three technical sessions delivered by experienced resource persons.

Mrs Mercy Menezes, Regional Resource Person, spoke on Gender Equity and Equality, explaining the difference between equality and equity while urging participants to challenge gender stereotypes and uphold the dignity of every individual.

The second session, led by Mrs Anita Frank, Secretary of the Commission for Women, Diocese of Mangalore, focused on Gender-Based Violence. She discussed its various forms, underlying causes and impact on society, while emphasising the shared responsibility of families and church communities in supporting survivors.

Advocate Pinky Vijetha D’Sa conducted the final session on the POSH and POCSO Acts, explaining legal provisions, safeguarding responsibilities, complaint mechanisms and practical measures to ensure the protection of women and children.

Participants pledge to spread awareness

The programme was compered by Mrs Anita D’Sa. Women leaders actively participated in interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions, expressing their commitment to conducting similar awareness programmes in their respective parishes.

The Commission hopes the initiative will help build stronger, safer and more gender-sensitive communities across the Diocese of Mangalore.
