Mangaluru: University responds to low PG admissions

Mangalore University (MU), a four-decade-old institution, has decided to extend the deadline for postgraduate course applications at its Mangalagangothri campus to August 30. The new academic session is scheduled to commence from September 1.

Officials said the extension is aimed at boosting admissions, as several departments continue to receive fewer applications than expected, similar to the previous academic year. Even departments that had previously recorded good enrolment have seen a drop in applications this year.

Low response from North Karnataka

Raju K Mogaveera, registrar of MU, explained that the university typically receives few candidates from North Karnataka. With universities in that region announcing results only recently, MU hopes the extension will give potential students an opportunity to apply.

Officials noted a slight increase in applications over the last few days of the previous deadline and expressed optimism that the extension could lead to higher admissions.

Departments facing low enrolment

While the exact number of courses with insufficient admissions will be announced after the process concludes, some departments, including Mass Communication and Journalism and Materials Science, continue to see very low or no enrolments.

Mogaveera added that departments are constituted under statute, so there is no provision to shut them down. Faculty members from under-enrolled departments may be deputed to other departments with related subjects to optimise resources.

Many departments with low enrolment have less than one permanent faculty member, highlighting ongoing staffing and enrolment challenges.

Conclusion

The extension of the PG admission deadline reflects MU’s efforts to attract more students and ensure smooth functioning across its departments, particularly those historically receiving fewer applicants
