Mangaluru: Mangalore University (MU) is yet to clear approximately ₹40 lakh in tax dues to Konaje Gram Panchayat, delaying local development projects. Despite multiple reminders, the university has failed to settle its outstanding payments.

According to Konaje Panchayat officials, MU owes ₹30,22,213 in property tax—₹8,39,517 for 2022-23, ₹9,88,771 for 2023-24, and ₹11,93,925 for 2024-25. Additionally, the university has ₹10,27,553 in cess arrears—₹2,85,436 for 2022-23, ₹3,36,182 for 2023-24, and ₹4,05,935 for 2024-25.

Panchayat president Geetha Damodar expressed frustration, stating that the university cites financial constraints as the reason for non-payment. “After significant pressure, MU paid ₹2 lakh a few months ago, despite promising ₹5 lakh. Development projects have been severely impacted due to these pending taxes,” she said.

On January 4, 2025, the latest reminder notice was issued to MU. However, as villagers continue raising concerns in local meetings, the panchayat is now considering legal action.

Panchayat Development Officer Muttappa Dhavalagi warned that if MU fails to pay, they will seek legal counsel for further steps. Meanwhile, MU officials acknowledged the pending dues, but finance officer Y Sangappa was unavailable for comments.
