MANGALURU: Five years after transitioning to private operation, the Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) has emerged as a benchmark for mid-sized airports in India, achieving remarkable growth in passenger traffic, infrastructure, and digital transformation.
Since Mangaluru International Airport Limited (MgIAL) took over commercial operations on October 31, 2020, annual passenger numbers have surged by 281%, reaching 2.34 million travellers.
Expanding connectivity and cargo operations
The airport now connects six Indian metro cities and seven international destinations through over 50 daily flights, reinforcing Mangaluru’s role as a key aviation hub on India’s western coast.
In a major boost to trade, the integrated cargo terminal, inaugurated in May 2023, has already handled 11,685 tonnes of freight, including regular exports of fresh produce to the Middle East. Officials said that the new terminal has improved turnaround times and cargo handling efficiency, enabling the airport to meet growing regional export demands.
Digital transformation and smart infrastructure
Digitisation has been central to the airport’s transformation journey. With the adoption of automated parking systems, DigiYatra, self-service check-in kiosks, and the Aviio digital platform, MgIAL has enhanced both passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
The integration of digital wayfinding, paperless boarding, and real-time flight updates has also contributed to a smoother travel experience. The airport’s commitment to smart infrastructure aligns with the government’s broader goal of modernising India’s aviation sector through technology.
Focus on safety and operational excellence
In terms of safety, the Mangaluru International Airport has made major upgrades over the past five years. These include runway recarpeting, the introduction of runway centreline lights, and the installation of advanced landing systems to improve visibility and flight safety during adverse weather conditions.
A new security architecture featuring intrusion detection systems, bullet-resistant vehicles, and enhanced perimeter surveillance has further strengthened the airport’s security framework.
MgIAL officials said that these measures were implemented as part of a long-term strategic plan to elevate the airport to global operational standards.
Awards and international recognition
The airport’s efforts have earned international acclaim. In 2024, Mangaluru International Airport was honoured with the Airports Council International (ACI) “Best Airport at Arrivals Globally” award, recognising its superior arrival experience among passengers.
It also achieved Level 4 accreditation in customer experience, placing it among the few airports in the Asia-Pacific region to reach that standard.
Sustainable growth and regional impact
Sustainability remains a core focus area for MgIAL. The airport has adopted energy-efficient lighting systems, waste management protocols, and green landscaping initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint.
By promoting eco-friendly operations and introducing renewable energy systems, the airport aims to achieve net-zero emissions in the coming years, aligning with India’s climate goals.
With steady growth in passenger traffic, expanding connectivity, and global recognition, the Mangaluru International Airport is fast becoming a regional aviation and logistics hub serving coastal Karnataka and neighbouring Kerala.
Future outlook
Looking ahead, MgIAL plans to expand terminal capacity, enhance airside infrastructure, and explore new international routes to Southeast Asia and the Middle East. These initiatives are part of the airport’s vision to transform into a world-class gateway for business and tourism.
Officials said the airport’s success story demonstrates the potential of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in modernising India’s airport infrastructure while maintaining operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
