MANGALURU: Food safety officials conducted an inspection at G.I. Bakery near Falnir Junction in Mangaluru on October 17, 2026, and seized bakery products allegedly being repacked and sold without mandatory labelling details.

The inspection was carried out by a team led by Dakshina Kannada District Food Safety Officer Dr Praveen Kumar C.H., following instructions from Health Minister U.T. Khader to inspect sweet-manufacturing units and food businesses involved in preparing and selling food products.

During the inspection, officials examined the bakery’s practices for repacking and selling bakery items. They found food packets that reportedly lacked essential information required under food safety regulations.

Products seized over missing label details

According to the information provided by the department, the seized products did not display several mandatory details on their packaging. These included the date of manufacture, expiry or use-by date, batch number and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence number.

Officials seized and sealed the products during the inspection. Such information helps consumers identify when a food product was manufactured, determine its period of use and trace it to the relevant batch or licensed food business.

The absence of these details can also make it difficult for authorities to trace products if a food safety concern arises.

Inspection follows minister’s directions

The inspection was conducted as part of efforts to monitor food businesses involved in manufacturing, repacking and selling bakery products and sweets.

The team led by Dr Praveen Kumar carried out checks at G.I. Bakery near Falnir Junction to assess compliance with food safety and labelling requirements.

The department’s action focused on products being repacked for sale without the required packaging information. Officials sealed the products identified during the inspection.

No further details about the quantity or value of the seized products, or any additional action against the bakery, were provided in the information released about the inspection.

Food labelling requirements under scrutiny

Food labels provide consumers with important information about the products they purchase. Details such as manufacturing and expiry dates, batch identification and the applicable FSSAI licence number support traceability and regulatory oversight.

Food businesses involved in repacking products are also expected to comply with applicable food safety and labelling requirements. Inspections help authorities identify deficiencies and take action in accordance with the relevant regulations.

The seizure at G.I. Bakery highlights the importance of checking packaging information when food products are prepared for resale. Further action, if any, will depend on the findings of the food safety authorities and the applicable procedures.
