Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order) Sidharth Goyal instructed officers to strictly follow legal procedures in cases of sexual assault and atrocities, rather than attempting to resolve them through informal discussions. Speaking at the monthly SC/ST grievance meeting at the city police commissioner’s office, he stressed that once an FIR is lodged, the judicial process must proceed without interference.
When Dalit leaders raised concerns about a case involving the assault and harassment of a Dalit girl being settled at the station level, DCP Goyal cautioned officers against such practices, warning that bypassing legal procedures could have serious consequences. He urged law enforcement to guide victims in filing cases properly. As per the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and POCSO Act, cases require an SP-rank officer for investigation. In these instances, an ACP will take charge.
Leaders also highlighted issues with autorickshaw drivers, including ride refusals, disputes at stands, and passenger mistreatment. In response, the DCP assured them that a meeting with auto drivers and owners would be scheduled soon.
Concerns were also raised about delays in hostel seat allocations for SC/ST students. Leaders suggested that applications be invited immediately after SSLC exams to prevent disruptions in higher education.
Meanwhile, cases related to SC/ST atrocities in the coastal region will soon be handled by the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) police station in Mangaluru, set to start operations in April.
