A simple effort to create a green patch in Kulshekar has led to the revival of the long-forgotten Vasaru Kodi (Soro Kodi) pond. Spearheaded by environmentalist Jeeth Milan Roche, the initiative has transformed a neglected waterbody into a flourishing ecosystem.
Retired banker Aloysius D’Silva shared that his family initially planned to plant fruit trees on their 19-cent ancestral land but rediscovered the unused pond. His son, upon returning from the US, strongly advocated for its restoration. With Roche’s guidance, they removed decades of silt, uncovering a 12-foot-deep reservoir capable of holding up to 11 lakh liters of water, currently filled with 7 lakh liters.
“This pond will significantly boost the groundwater table and must be preserved,” said Roche, founder of The Vana Charitable Trust.
Garden to Plate organic market gains traction
The trust also runs the Garden to Plate organic market, held every Sunday near Casa Grande Mall, Attavar (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM). The initiative connects farmers directly with consumers, promoting organic produce, honey, and forest products. “The response has been encouraging, and customer numbers continue to grow,” Roche noted.
