Kite enthusiasts from across India and abroad are flocking to Mangaluru to participate in the eighth ONGC-MRPL International Kite Festival, set to take place this weekend at Tannirbhavi Beach, one of India’s premier kite-flying destinations. The event, part of the Karavali Utsava celebrations, promises an exciting two-day showcase of kite flying and aerial artistry.

Organised by Team Mangalore, the festival will feature 52 kite flyers, including 22 international participants from countries such as the UK, Greece, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Indonesia, as well as 30 Indian kite flyers from regions including Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. Attendees will be treated to an array of kites, ranging from traditional designs to innovative inflatables, with a special focus on quad-line sports kites.

Among the international participants is Team Magnetik from Greece, known for their expertise in stunt kites. They will present synchronised flying performances set to music. Additionally, veteran kite flier Ashok Shah from Maharashtra will present a spectacular ‘train kite’ featuring 100 Kathakali-themed kites.

This year’s festival introduces an official mascot, ‘Uriye,’ and will include a special night-flying display with LED-lit kites. The event is expected to attract tourists to Mangaluru, with the deputy commissioner announcing that the festival will be held annually from now on. Visitors can enjoy ample parking, food stalls, and convenient ferry access. For safety, the use of manja kites is prohibited.
