The stage is all set for the sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing (NMPA IOS), scheduled from May 30 to June 1 at Tannirbhavi Eco Beach, Mangaluru. Organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by the Mantra Surf Club, the championship is held under the Surfing Federation of India (SFI). It also marks the second leg of the 2025 National Surfing Championship series.

This year’s competition promises high drama, with wave forecasts predicting 10 to 12-foot swells during the event—posing a test of skill, endurance, and adaptability for surfers. The looming cyclonic activity over the Arabian Sea and erratic weather patterns may further challenge participants and potentially disrupt proceedings.

Originally planned at Sasihithlu Beach, the event was moved to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach to ensure safer conditions without compromising wave quality. The new venue offers better facilities for both athletes and spectators.

With the Asian Surf Championship 2025—a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games—around the corner, performances here will significantly impact national rankings. The event also aims to nurture upcoming talent, with recent local competitions identifying regional surfers for the national stage.

Rammohan Paranjape, vice president of SFI and director at Mantra Surf Club, emphasized the support from New Mangalore Port Authority, Karnataka Tourism, and Cycle Pure Agarbathis in enabling the growth of Indian surfing.
