Residents of Bengre, located on the outskirts of Mangaluru, have raised serious concerns regarding rampant illegal sand extraction from a six-acre plot near Tannirubhavi Hindu Rudrabhoomi. This land, once owned by the Fisheries Department, was initially designated for jetty construction. However, the remaining area has remained idle, leading to significant sand accumulation over the years.
Locals allege that unidentified individuals have been engaged in illicit sand extraction from the site for the past three to four months. Reports indicate that they are using heavy machinery, including JCBs and tipper trucks, to carry out the operations under the cover of night. This ongoing activity has resulted in the creation of five-foot deep pits, raising serious safety concerns for residents and wildlife in the area.
Despite numerous oral complaints lodged with the Department of Mines and Geology and the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) officials, no tangible action has been taken to address the situation. Frustrated by the lack of response, authorities have recently advised residents to file a written complaint to ensure a more thorough investigation and necessary action.
The authorities’ inaction has left locals increasingly worried about public safety and environmental degradation. The excavation not only poses risks of accidents due to the deep pits but also threatens the ecological balance of the region. Residents are calling for immediate intervention to halt the illegal sand extraction activities and safeguard the area.
As the situation in Bengre remains unresolved, the community is hopeful that formal complaints will prompt action from the relevant authorities. The need for immediate attention to this illegal activity is paramount to ensure the safety and well-being of residents while protecting the environment from further harm.
