Mangaluru: KMC Hospital, Attavar, in collaboration with BEBIG Medical Solutions, Germany, successfully conducted a five-day HDR (High-Dose-Rate) Brachytherapy training programme for Armed Forces Medical Services from 28 July to 1 August. The workshop brought together medical officers from premier defence hospitals including Command Hospital (Bengaluru), INHS Asvini (Mumbai), Command Hospital (Lucknow), and Command Hospital (Kolkata).
A landmark academic partnership
The training was held under the academic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangaluru and BEBIG Medical Solutions, a global leader in brachytherapy innovation and education. This partnership highlights a shared vision to strengthen oncology care and expertise through structured training and international collaboration.
Centre of excellence in radiotherapy
KMC Hospital’s Oncology Centre at Attavar, a recognised regional referral hub, is known for its advanced infrastructure and precision-based treatment protocols. The centre regularly performs intricate brachytherapy procedures and remains at the forefront of radiation oncology in coastal Karnataka.
The ongoing workshop provided a mix of hands-on training, treatment planning sessions, and quality assurance workshops. Participants gained exposure to international best practices in brachytherapy — a key modality in cancer treatment — under the guidance of the Department of Radiation Oncology faculty.
Knowledge exchange for better outcomes
The workshop served as a platform for exchanging clinical knowledge and enhancing practical skills among armed forces doctors, ensuring better preparedness in managing complex cancer cases in military hospitals. The event also underscored the importance of public-private and civil-defence collaborations in strengthening India’s healthcare framework.
This initiative further reinforces KMC’s role as a leader in cancer education and care, while also empowering medical personnel serving the nation’s defence sector with cutting-edge medical techniques.
