Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district recorded the sale of 561 cars and 1,679 two-wheelers during the 10-day Dasara festival period this year, with Mangaluru emerging as the largest contributor to vehicle sales across the district.
The figures highlight strong festive demand for both cars and two-wheelers, with luxury vehicles accounting for more than 20 per cent of the cars sold. These vehicles were valued at over Rs 25 lakh each, reflecting the demand for premium automobiles in Mangaluru and the surrounding areas.
Vehicle purchases traditionally increase during the festive season, particularly around Dasara and Deepavali. The period from Ganeshotsava to Deepavali is considered an important window for automobile dealers, while Akshaya Tritiya also sees a rise in vehicle purchases.
Mangaluru accounts for majority of car sales
Mangaluru recorded 392 car sales and 1,102 two-wheeler sales during the 10-day Dasara period, making it the largest market among the three regional transport office (RTO) regions in Dakshina Kannada.
Puttur registered 110 car sales and 356 two-wheeler sales, while Bantwal recorded 59 cars and 221 bikes.
The combined figures for the three RTO regions stood at 561 cars and 1,679 two-wheelers.
| RTO region | Cars sold | Two-wheelers sold |
|---|---|---|
| Mangaluru | 392 | 1,102 |
| Puttur | 110 | 356 |
| Bantwal | 59 | 221 |
| Total | 561 | 1,679 |
Mangaluru accounted for nearly 70 per cent of the district’s car sales during the period. Its share of two-wheeler sales was also substantial, at around 66 per cent.
The figures underline the city’s importance as a vehicle market within Dakshina Kannada, particularly for passenger cars.
Luxury cars contribute to festive demand
More than one-fifth of the cars sold in Dakshina Kannada during the Dasara period were luxury vehicles priced above Rs 25 lakh.
The trend points to a significant market for premium cars in the district. Mangaluru is regarded as one of Karnataka’s prominent centres for luxury car purchases, with festive occasions providing an opportunity for buyers to make high-value purchases.
However, the available figures do not specify the exact number of luxury cars sold or provide a brand-wise breakdown of registrations.
Festive season boosts vehicle purchases
The Dasara sales figures reflect a broader pattern in which vehicle purchases rise during major festivals. Buyers often consider auspicious occasions an appropriate time to purchase cars and two-wheelers, while dealerships typically see increased interest during these periods.
Nationally, two-wheelers account for around 70 per cent of vehicle sales, according to the report. In Mangaluru, however, car purchases are also keeping pace with demand for two-wheelers, with the city recording a strong share of both categories.
The 10-day Dasara figures offer a snapshot of festive vehicle demand in Dakshina Kannada. Sales trends through Deepavali and the wider festive season will provide further insight into whether the momentum continues.
