The seizure will now form part of the investigation into the alleged possession of the narcotic substance. Police are expected to examine how the MDMA was obtained and whether it was intended for personal consumption, distribution or sale.
At this stage, the seizure and arrest do not by themselves establish guilt, and the allegations will be subject to the legal process.
Case registered under NDPS Act
Following the seizure, Kavoor police registered Crime No. 128/2026 under the NDPS Act.
The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the possession of the drug and whether others were involved.
Cases involving MDMA are investigated under the NDPS Act, which provides for stringent action against the unlawful possession, sale, transportation and distribution of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
The quantity seized in this case was approximately 16 grams, according to the police information cited in the report.
Police may also examine communication records, contacts and other evidence as part of their investigation, depending on the circumstances of the case.
Accused previously booked in three cases
Police records cited in the report indicate that Mohammed Irfan A.K. had previously been booked in three cases.
These include a night-time theft case registered at Ullal police station in 2020, another night-time theft case at Punjalkatte police station in 2020, and a case registered at Ullal police station in 2024 relating to alleged consumption of ganja.
The previous cases are separate from the current MDMA seizure and should not be treated as proof of involvement in the present offence.
The police are now investigating the latest case registered at Kavoor police station.
Investigation underway
The latest seizure is part of continuing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Mangaluru to detect the movement and possession of prohibited narcotic substances.
Investigators will be required to establish the source of the MDMA and determine whether the accused was acting alone or had links with a wider supply network.
The investigation could also focus on the circumstances in which the substance came into the accused’s possession.
Officials have not indicated any additional arrests in connection with the case as of the latest report.
Drug seizures remain a concern in coastal Karnataka
Mangaluru and other parts of coastal Karnataka have witnessed several drug-related investigations in recent years, with police regularly reporting seizures of substances including MDMA and ganja.
The latest case has once again brought attention to drug enforcement in the city and surrounding areas. Police operations in residential, commercial and road-access areas are often aimed at identifying individuals suspected of possessing or transporting prohibited substances.
However, the outcome of each case depends on the evidence collected during investigation and the subsequent legal proceedings.
Legal process to continue
Following the arrest, the case will proceed according to the provisions of the NDPS Act and the applicable criminal procedure.
Police will continue collecting evidence and documenting the circumstances of the seizure. Any further findings or arrests will depend on the progress of the investigation.
The previous cases mentioned by police will also remain separate legal matters and do not determine the outcome of the present case.
The latest seizure underscores the importance of continued enforcement against the possession and movement of synthetic drugs in Mangaluru.
