Mangaluru: A tragic incident shook the outskirts of Mangaluru on Friday morning when a 60-year-old man was found dead with multiple injuries after being attacked by a stray dog. The deceased has been identified as Dayananda. Police sources confirmed that the incident occurred in Kumpala in the early hours of the day.

Discovery of the victim

Local residents reported that Dayananda was discovered lying in a pool of blood near his residence. Authorities were alerted immediately, and police rushed to the spot. Eyewitnesses informed the police that a stray dog, its face smeared with blood, was seen roaming around the area shortly after the attack.

Police and forensic investigation

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy stated, “Forensic experts who visited the spot confirmed that the multiple injuries on the face and body were caused by a dog.” The police have started a detailed investigation to understand the circumstances that led to this rare but fatal attack.

The forensic team documented the injuries and collected evidence from the scene. While such attacks by stray dogs are unusual, the authorities are emphasising the importance of caution in areas where stray animals roam freely.

Action taken on the stray dog

As a precautionary measure, the dog suspected to have caused the attack was captured by local dog catchers. It has been shifted to the Animal Care Trust’s shelter in Shaktinagar, where veterinary experts will monitor its behaviour and health. Authorities have also warned residents to avoid approaching stray dogs and report any aggressive animals to the local municipality.

Police case and investigation

Ullal Police have registered a case and launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Officers are looking into whether the attack was provoked, if the dog had any history of aggression, and whether similar stray dogs are present in the vicinity.

Authorities are also planning to increase awareness campaigns about stray dog attacks and the importance of reporting aggressive animals. Residents have expressed shock and grief over the sudden loss of Dayananda, who was a well-known figure in the local community.

Safety measures and public concern

The incident has raised concerns about public safety in areas with a high population of stray animals. While municipal authorities continue their ongoing dog sterilisation and vaccination drives, residents are advised to exercise caution, especially during early morning and late evening hours.

Animal welfare organisations have also appealed for responsible management of stray animals. They emphasise the need for humane treatment, including vaccination, sterilisation, and shelter, while ensuring the safety of the public.

Conclusion

The tragic death of Dayananda serves as a reminder of the risks posed by stray animals when proper monitoring and preventive measures are not in place. Authorities have assured residents that steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future while continuing to promote animal welfare.
