Mangaluru: Dr. Rahul M Rao, a neuropsychiatrist at Mangaluru Psychiatry Centre and assistant professor at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, has earned a place in the Guinness World Records along with 5,684 participants. The record was achieved for creating the largest online video album of people holding ice, initiated by Team Synergy of Sun Pharma Laboratories in November last year. The goal was to raise nationwide awareness about peripheral neuropathy—a painful and often disabling nerve condition.
Recently, participants received official recognition and certificates for their contribution. The initiative was inspired by the famous ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, with doctors across India recording short videos holding ice cubes while explaining the condition.
“Peripheral neuropathy is common among individuals with long-standing diabetes and chronic alcohol use,” explained Dr. Rao. “It leads to severe pain, tingling, and burning, especially in the hands and feet, making everyday tasks difficult—walking, writing, or even touching objects.”
In Mangaluru, Dr. Rao has observed a growing number of cases, particularly among diabetic and alcohol-dependent patients. “Toxic neuropathy is emerging as a major concern. Long-term high blood sugar or alcohol exposure damages small nerves, causing daily pain and significantly impacting mental health,” he said.
He also emphasized that nerve damage—often overshadowed by complications like liver, kidney, or eye issues—deserves equal attention. “With proper diagnosis and treatment, this condition is manageable. Raising awareness is the first step,” Dr. Rao concluded.
