MANGALURU: In a major traffic enforcement initiative, the Mangaluru City Police have registered 11,220 cases over the past three months for various violations, including illegal parking, overspeeding near accident-prone areas, and use of tinted glass, collecting a total of ₹53,69,100 in fines.
Special drive to ensure smooth traffic flow
City Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy said in an official statement that the special drive was launched to address public complaints about vehicles obstructing roads and causing traffic congestion across the city.
“To ensure smooth traffic movement in Mangaluru and address public grievances regarding illegal and obstructive parking, we conducted a dedicated drive over the last three months,” Commissioner Reddy said.
During this operation, police booked 4,793 cases for offences such as no parking, wrong parking, double parking, and parking on footpaths, imposing ₹23,21,200 in fines.
Action against commercial complexes
Following a surge in complaints about congestion near shopping complexes and commercial hubs, police officials conducted meetings with managements, directing them to provide adequate parking spaces for customers and visitors. Notices were issued to establishments that failed to comply, warning of further legal action if violations continued.
Overspeeding near accident-prone zones
In an effort to enhance road safety, police identified several black spots — accident-prone areas — and carried out targeted enforcement in those zones. A total of 562 cases were registered against motorists for overspeeding, resulting in fines worth ₹5,62,000.
Commissioner Reddy added that continuous monitoring of such locations would continue, with additional surveillance cameras being installed to deter rash driving.
Crackdown on tinted glass violations
The drive also included strict action against vehicles using tinted glass and black films, in violation of Supreme Court directives. The police booked 5,865 cases in this category, collecting ₹24,85,900 in fines, and removed the tinted films from all vehicles during inspection.
Focus on public cooperation
Police urged motorists to follow traffic rules diligently and avoid illegal modifications to their vehicles. “The goal is not to penalise but to ensure safer and smoother roads for all citizens,” Commissioner Reddy said.
Authorities also announced plans to launch awareness campaigns and collaborate with educational institutions and commercial bodies to improve compliance with traffic regulations in the city.
