Mangaluru: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has said that the accused in the alleged abetment of a minor girl’s suicide was arrested on the very day the incident took place and that crucial DNA evidence has been collected, which is expected to play a significant role in securing justice in the case.
The accused, identified as Manish Poojary, a native of Ganjimath, was taken into custody immediately after the incident came to light, according to the commissioner. The case pertains to the death of a pregnant minor girl from Katipalla, who allegedly died by suicide on June 24 after reportedly leaving behind a note detailing the circumstances that led to her extreme step.
Speaking about the progress of the investigation, Commissioner Reddy said the police had gathered substantial evidence, including DNA samples that support the prosecution’s case. He added that the investigation is continuing from multiple angles and that the police are committed to ensuring a thorough and impartial probe.
Commissioner questions selective outrage
The police commissioner also made strong remarks regarding the reactions from certain sections of society and what he termed as inconsistencies in public responses to criminal cases.
According to Reddy, demands for justice often appear to be influenced by the community background of the accused rather than by concern for the victim. He observed that when an accused belongs to another community, there is usually an immediate and vocal demand for justice. However, when the accused belongs to one’s own community, similar levels of outrage are often absent.
The commissioner said such reactions indicate communal sensitivity rather than a genuine commitment to justice. He stressed that every accused person should be viewed through the same standard, irrespective of community, caste or religion.
“Crime is a universal problem, and no community is exempt from the reality that criminals exist everywhere,” he stated, urging people to avoid communalising criminal incidents and instead focus on ensuring justice for victims.
Investigation gathers pace
Police sources said investigators have intensified their efforts and are collecting evidence related to the case. A youth has also been taken into custody in connection with the investigation, though officials have not disclosed further details regarding his alleged role.
Investigators are examining several aspects of the case, including the contents of the alleged suicide note and other evidence recovered during the inquiry. The police have indicated that forensic findings, particularly the DNA evidence, could become a crucial element during the trial.
The case has drawn considerable public attention in Mangaluru and neighbouring areas due to the victim’s age and the circumstances surrounding her death. The incident has also sparked discussions on the need for greater protection of minors and the importance of ensuring timely legal action in cases involving vulnerable victims.
Drug angle also under scrutiny
Commissioner Reddy further disclosed that some individuals associated with the girl allegedly had links to a drug network. However, he clarified that the investigation into these suspected connections is still underway and that police are exploring all possible angles before arriving at any conclusions.
Officials said they are examining digital evidence, witness statements and forensic findings to establish the complete sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
The police have appealed to the public to refrain from spreading rumours or communal narratives surrounding the case and instead allow the investigation to proceed based on evidence and facts.
Conclusion
As the investigation into the death of the minor girl continues, police maintain that the collection of DNA evidence and other forensic material has strengthened the case. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to conducting an unbiased investigation and ensuring that those found responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
