The state administration has initiated the groundwork for a comprehensive blueprint to establish a metro rail system linking Mangaluru and Udupi.

This proposed 64-kilometer rapid transit corridor is expected to enhance connectivity between Mangaluru, Udupi, and Manipal. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has been assigned the task of conducting an in-depth analysis of the project’s technical and financial feasibility. Official directives regarding this initiative have been forwarded to the deputy commissioners of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Former Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) secretary, Mohan Das Hegde, has urged health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and industries minister M B Patil to ensure that the metro route extends to key urban centers, suburban localities, and industrial hubs along the Mangaluru-Manipal belt. He emphasized that this infrastructure development would spur economic progress, facilitate urban expansion, and streamline the region’s transport framework.

Hegde pointed out that the existing road transport network is severely congested, causing prolonged travel times. As the population grows, a metro system is seen as an efficient alternative for addressing mobility challenges.

Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner, Mullai Muhilan, acknowledged receipt of the government’s communication regarding the project. He affirmed that BMRCL would carry out the feasibility study, and subsequent actions would depend on its findings.
