Mangaluru: The Congress’s allegations regarding the supply of untreated water to nearly 50% of areas under Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) have been refuted by Urban Development Minister B.S. Suresh. Responding to a starred question by MLC Ivan D’Souza, the minister confirmed that the water distributed in the city is safe and undergoes proper treatment.
D’Souza had raised concerns over reports of pollution in the Nethravathi River and sought details on preventive measures. The minister clarified that drinking water is sourced from Thumbe Dam and supplied only after rigorous testing for pH, turbidity, and other quality parameters. Monthly biological tests are also conducted across wards and pump houses to ensure water safety. He further asserted that neither the MCC nor the health department had received complaints about health issues linked to water consumption.
The Congress-led fact-finding committee, headed by D’Souza, had earlier inspected the sewage treatment plant at Pachanady and found evidence of contamination at the Maravoor Dam. The committee examined equipment, checked non-functional pumps, and collected water samples for laboratory testing.
However, MCC Mayor Manoj Kumar dismissed the opposition’s claims as politically motivated. “Water from Thumbe Dam undergoes thorough treatment before distribution, and daily quality checks confirm its potability,” he stated, emphasizing that the city follows strict water safety protocols.
