On August 31, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) began distributing ID cards to 93 street vendors near the State Bank area, marking the first phase of a larger plan to regulate street vending in the city. Mayor Sudhir Shetty announced that all 667 registered street vendors will be gradually allocated designated business zones across Mangaluru.

During a recent phone-in program held at the mayor’s office, citizens lauded MCC’s ‘Operation Tiger’ initiative aimed at clearing footpaths and improving public spaces. The Mayor clarified that street vending on footpaths will not be allowed and confirmed that ‘Operation Tiger,’ contracted for a year, will continue its efforts to enforce this regulation.

Zonal Commissioner Rekha Shetty provided additional details, stating that specific arrangements have been made for different types of vendors, including flower sellers, fancy item vendors, snack vendors, and fruit and vegetable sellers near State Bank. She assured that these vendors would receive not only shops but also essential amenities like water and electricity to conduct their businesses.

The MCC’s structured approach aims to balance the needs of street vendors while maintaining order in the city, ensuring a win-win for both vendors and pedestrians.
