Mangaluru [Karnataka]: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has become the subject of misinformation circulating online regarding an alleged increase in service charges in the Kateel Durgaparameshwari constituency. The Chief Minister and the state government clarified that they have no role in the hike, which is solely the decision of the local governing body.
According to officials, the governing body raised the service charges after 14 years, citing the need to cover operational costs. Social media posts incorrectly attributing this decision to the state government have been widely shared, prompting official clarification.
Election Commission records and political allegations
Manjunath Bhandari, a senior Congress leader, also criticised what he called double standards by the Election Commission (EC). The EC, an autonomous body, reportedly requests records from the Congress regarding its campaign activities in Kateel, citing allegations of vote rigging. However, Bhandari noted that when similar allegations are made against the BJP, no records or investigations appear to be initiated.
Bhandari said, “The public should be aware of the BJP, which is ruling by keeping autonomous institutions under its control in a democratic system. Attention should be paid to irregularities. Democracy should be preserved.”
Public awareness and political implications
The controversy comes ahead of upcoming local and state-level elections, making it a politically sensitive issue. Analysts suggest that misinformation related to service charges or administrative decisions can influence public perception, particularly in constituencies with strong religious and cultural affiliations such as Kateel.
Officials have urged citizens to verify information from official government and local administration sources before believing or sharing social media claims.
Conclusion
While the service charge hike is a local administrative decision, the spread of misinformation linking it to the state government highlights the importance of media literacy and fact-checking. Political leaders and autonomous institutions must act transparently to maintain public trust and ensure the proper functioning of democratic processes.
