A fresh proposal to set up a maritime university in Mangaluru is receiving strong backing from regional leaders and industry players aiming to harness coastal Karnataka’s marine potential to create a centre of excellence for maritime education, industry, and research.
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has spearheaded the initiative, calling it timely as the year marks both the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Abbakka of Ullal and the 50th anniversary of New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA). He believes the university could be instrumental in driving port-centric growth.
NMPA Chairman A.V. Ramana expressed willingness to support the initiative, stating the port is capable of being an institutional anchor. “We can offer operational expertise, real-time industry exposure, and assist in developing a curriculum suited to India’s western coast dynamics,” he said.
Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President Anand Pai emphasized that Mangaluru’s historical maritime significance and strategic location make it ideal for such a university. KCCI is working closely with Capt Chowta on the concept.
Ramana noted that while the city is a long-standing educational hub, it lacks dedicated maritime training. The proposed institution would equip students with practical and theoretical knowledge tailored to marine careers.
The university would also promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill-building, while attracting investments and supporting start-ups in the maritime sector. Ramana added that NMPA is ready to host a “Centre of Maritime Excellence” initially to serve as the university’s pilot base.
