Mangaluru: In response to growing concerns over the pollution of water resources, particularly the River Phalguni, due to the malfunctioning sewage treatment plant (STP) at Pachanady, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced plans to upgrade the STP. The facility, currently operating on an activated sludge process (ASP) system, will be converted into a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) unit, known for its higher efficiency in treating wastewater.
Funding and Costs
The upgradation, estimated to cost ₹6.9 crore, will be financed through the ₹40 crore compensation allocated by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). This fund will also support broader improvements, including upgrading the city’s underground drainage (UGD) system for better sewage management. The Project Management Development Consultancy (PMDC) for the initiative is EGIS India Consulting Engineer Private Limited.
Mayor Manoj Kumar revealed that the action plan includes seven projects, encompassing tender premiums, PMDC charges, and operation and maintenance costs. These projects were discussed during a council meeting on Saturday.
Addressing Pollution Concerns
Residents of Maravoor and neighboring villages have long complained about untreated water from the Pachanady STP being discharged into the River Phalguni, contaminating a critical drinking water source. During the council meeting, corporators from both ruling and opposition parties raised this issue, leading to a heated discussion.
Chief whip Premanand Shetty assured that modifications to the proposal would be made to address these concerns, and works would proceed accordingly.
Joint Inspection Initiative
In a bid to ensure accountability and transparency, Mayor Manoj Kumar announced the formation of a joint inspection team. This team, comprising corporators from both parties, will inspect all four STPs in the city—Kavoor, Pachanady, Bajal, and Surathkal—to assess their functioning and compliance with environmental standards.
The upgrade of the Pachanady STP is seen as a crucial step toward restoring the health of the River Phalguni and ensuring access to clean drinking water for residents in the region.
