With the pre-monsoon rains approaching, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is taking proactive measures to desilt rajakaluves across the city, aiming to prevent floods. Past monsoon seasons have seen widespread waterlogging and clogged drains, resulting in artificial flooding on streets and in homes. To address these issues, MCC is focused on clearing stormwater drains quickly to minimize the risk of inundation.
On Saturday, District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao discussed strategies to avoid damage to public property caused by artificial floods. He instructed Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan MP and MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik to ensure necessary precautions are in place before the monsoon season begins, emphasizing that there is no shortage of funds for these efforts.
MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik confirmed that the city corporation has already floated tenders for the desilting of all rajakaluves in Mangaluru. He stated that work will commence immediately after the tendering process is completed. The aim is to ensure that similar flooding incidents do not occur this year.
Last year, several areas in Mangaluru and parts of the Dakshina Kannada district experienced artificial flooding, especially between June and December, due to inadequate stormwater drains and blockages in rajakaluves. This flooding disrupted traffic and caused significant inconvenience. DC Muhilan, who also serves as the MCC administrator, emphasized that such situations should not be allowed to recur in the upcoming summer.
