Mangaluru: A mentally distressed man from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, was rescued in Mangaluru after he was found wandering in the Panambur police station limits in a distressed condition.
The rescue was carried out following a late-night call received by rescuers from the police.
Found hungry, injured and shivering
The man, identified only as Chotu, appeared to have suffered physical injuries and was reportedly hungry, soaked from the rain and shivering when he was found.
According to the rescue team, he alleged that he had been assaulted after entering a temple. He was found with injuries on his hands and is suspected to have sustained a fracture to the bridge of his nose. His injuries are yet to be medically confirmed.
Rescuers said Chotu appeared to have gone without food for several days. After being brought to safety, he reportedly ate four plates of rice, highlighting the extent of his hunger.
Rescue highlights need for compassion
The incident has drawn attention to the plight of homeless and mentally distressed individuals who often go without food, shelter and medical care.
Rescuers appealed for greater compassion towards vulnerable people, noting that while many struggle to find a single meal, large quantities of food continue to be wasted every day.
Further efforts are expected to focus on providing Chotu with medical treatment, counselling and assistance in tracing his family in Uttar Pradesh
